Austin Spurs
Cedar Park is home to the American basketball team of the defending NBA Development League champion, Austin Spurs. The home games of the Austin Spurs are usually played in Cedar Park at the HEB Center.
History of Austin Spurs
- Initially, the Austin Spurs were formed in Columbus, Georgia and were called the Columbus Riverdragons.
- In 2005, the franchise changed hands and the new owners were the Southwest Basketball LLC, after which the team was relocated to Austin, Texas.
- After the relocation of the team, the logo and name were changed to the Austin Toros in 2005. The “Toros” was the first and only D-League and NBA-linked team to have a Spanish nickname. The Toros started playing in the 2005-2006 season.
- In 2007, the Toros were taken over by the San Antonio Spurs and became the 2nd team to be owned by an NBA team.
- In 2010, the Toros decided to move to the HEB Center in Cedar Park and play in the new facility.
- In 2012, the Toros won against the Los Angeles D-Fenders and won their first championship.
- In 2014, the colors and logo of the team were changed in order to reflect the black and silver motif used by the Spurs. The Toros also changed their name to Austin Spurs, keeping with their parent team.
Texas Stars
Belonging to the American Hockey League (AHL), the Texas Stars are the main affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars. The Texas Stars play their home games at the HEB Center in Cedar Park.
History of Texas Stars
- In 2008, Iowa Stars changed their name to Chops as they wanted to end their partnership with the Dallas Stars.
- In 2009, the franchise of the Austin area was taken up by Tom Hicks, who was the owner of NHL Stars. The Iowa Chops franchise was purchased in 2010.
- The team’s debut season was extremely successful.
- They won the 2nd place in the West Division.
- The Texas Stars defeated Rockford during the first playoffs.
- Won the 1st Division championship by gaining victory over Chicago.
- They also won the 1st Robert W. Clarke Trophy by winning against Hamilton and won the title of the Western Conference Champions.
- They were defeated by Hershey in the 2010 Calder Cup finals.
- In 2014, the Texas Stars succeeded in winning the Calder Cup by defeating St. John’s Ice Caps.
- In 2014, the Stars were bought by the group owned by Tom Gaglardi and became an AHL affiliate.
- In 2015, the new logo and colors of the Texas Stars were unveiled, keeping in sync with the parent club.
Cedar Park Texas Punishers
The Punishers were the first and sole Minor Professional Football League (MPFL) franchise team and they joined the top level minor league professional teams of Cedar Park.
